On Friday, 22 August, at the central ticket offices of Cervino SpA, the project for the new “Cervino The One” tri-cable car was presented to the public. It will reduce the travel time between Breuil-Cervinia and Plateau Rosa from 50 to just 17 minutes, representing a decisive step towards the future of Alpine mobility. Cervino SpA, the promoter of the project, is the company that manages the ski lifts in Breuil-Cervinia, Valtournenche, Torgnon and Chamois.
The project, worth approximately £170 million (of which £70 million has already been allocated by the Aosta Valley Region), involves the construction of two sections – Cervinia-Plan Maison and Plan Maison-Plateau Rosa – with a total length of 5,970 metres and a vertical rise of 1,427 metres.
The project will be carried out by a temporary consortium led by LEITNER, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of ropeway systems as mandatary, and a pool of local companies including COGEIS, IVIES and BGF. Work is expected to begin in 2026.
Policreo is part of the multidisciplinary design team alongside LEITNER, Studio Ardolino, Alpteam and Pastoret Engineering & Consulting.
The project meets several requirements: increased hourly capacity and reduced travel times, overcoming the obsolescence of existing facilities, greater resistance to adverse environmental conditions (winds up to 100 km/h), the possibility of guaranteeing a dual line to allow maintenance without interrupting service and continuity of operation even during construction. In addition, the new facility will enable a direct connection between Italy and Switzerland, from Breuil-Cervinia to Zermatt and vice versa, thanks to its integration with the “Matterhorn Alpine Crossing”.
In this context, Policreo oversaw the architectural and landscape design of the stations, with particular attention to environmental integration, luminosity, the quality of the spaces, and the choice of materials. The approach follows the principle of responsible architecture, aimed at ensuring functionality, sustainability, and consistency with the Alpine landscape.
‘Cervino The One’ is a tourist infrastructure that will replace the existing facility: a project that redesigns accessibility to the Matterhorn and strengthens its international appeal, in a cross-border vision that unites Italy and Switzerland.
