Piazza Pia wins THE PLAN Award 2025 – Public Space category

An international recognition of architectural and urban excellence

The Piazza Pia project in Rome, which reconnects the historic axis between Castel Sant’Angelo and Via della Conciliazione, has won THE PLAN Award 2025 in the Public Space category.

Promoted by Roma Capitale and implemented by ANAS S.p.A. (FS Italiane Group) as part of the 2025 Jubilee, the project was designed by the Temporary Consortium Proger S.p.A. – Policreo S.r.l. and carried out by Salcef S.p.A., with technical support from SAFE – Certified Structure Ingegneria S.r.l.

The regeneration of Piazza Pia has transformed a congested junction into a continuous and accessible public space, thanks to the extension of the Lungotevere in Sassia underpass and the complete pedestrianisation of the area.

The work was completed in 450 days and required complex management of underground utilities and archaeological interference, with an integrated approach combining engineering and architecture.

The project stands out for its material and landscape consistency – with basalt and travertine paving, furniture and fountains designed as identifying elements – and for its attention to the principles of Design for All, which guarantee universal accessibility and safety in use.

The international award recognises the value of a collaborative effort that, in an extraordinarily short time, has restored a symbolic place to the city, transforming infrastructure into an urban landscape and a space for interaction.
