With the start of the new academic year, we’d like to highlight a publication that is closely related to our work and that connects research, education, and design practice.

Maggioli Editore has published *Technological and Environmental Design in Architecture: Process | Design | Construction | Reuse*, a volume dedicated to the complexity of architectural design throughout a building’s entire life cycle.

Designed as a resource for university and advanced education, as well as for professional practice, the handbook addresses topics ranging from building systems to integrated design, from the construction process to environmental and social sustainability, and on to the management, reuse, and transformation of contexts. Drawings, functional diagrams, construction details, and construction site images accompany the theoretical content, linking technical knowledge with design application.

 

Policreo contributed to the in-depth materials accompanying the volume through four projects, differing in scale, purpose, and stage of completion: the Pietro Barilla Children’s Hospital in Parma, Mix House in Parma, the Tzamberlet School in Aosta, and the Bolzano Library.

These are very different experiences, yet they share a common approach: viewing the project not as an isolated event, but as a process capable of bringing together context, people, technologies, resources, and transformations over time.

The inclusion of these projects in a volume aimed at education holds special significance for us. Sharing our design work also means transforming experience into knowledge: making visible the processes, choices, complexities, and responsibilities that lie behind the solutions we build or design.

This dimension has always been part of our work, and today—forty years after the firm’s founding—we feel it is more central than ever: designing also means contributing to the creation of tools with which to interpret and navigate complexity.
