The complex project for the extension of the Lungotevere in Sassia subway to Piazza Pia, completed in the 1990s for the Jubilee Year 2000, aims to bury the road system in the historic centre of Rome, allowing the pedestrianisation of Piazza Pia and the removal of the traffic lights at the intersection with Via della Conciliazione. The project, which Policreo is drawing up in partnership with Proger SpA, envisages the new configuration with the subway ramp starting after the Passetto di Borgo, with the entrance located near the Auditorium. One of the most delicate phases consists in resolving the interference of two collectors, Basso di Destra and Basso Farnesina, which affect the layout of the subway project and the new box culvert. One of the main critical issues concerns the need to keep the sewerage system in constant operation. This is made possible by a special pumping system that, according to the work phases, manages the direction of the flows, allowing the realisation of the various works. The project will re-establish the historical hierarchy of the ancient urban axis between Hadrian’s Mausoleum and the Circus of Caligula, i.e. the ancient Via Cornelia.
