On Sunday 2 August, Sergio Beccarelli will take part on behalf of Policreo in “Cervino accende la storia”, the event promoted by Cervino S.p.A. in Breuil-Cervinia to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the historic Breuil-Cervinia–Plan Maison cable car.

Policreo’s participation forms part of a wider discussion on the future of Alpine infrastructure and its relationship with the landscape. The practice is a member of the multidisciplinary team working on “Cervino The One”, the new tri-cable connection linking Breuil-Cervinia, Plan Maison and Plateau Rosa.

Promoted by Cervino S.p.A., the project involves LEITNER, lead contractor of the temporary business consortium, the local companies COGEIS, IVIES and BGF and, within the design team, Policreo, Studio Ardolino, Alpteam and Pastoret Engineering & Consulting.

Policreo is responsible for the architectural and landscape design of the stations. This work concerns not only the construction of a new transport infrastructure, but also the removal of obsolete structures and supports, the reduction of the visual and environmental impact of the new built elements, and the restoration of the areas affected by the project.

When a cable transport system reaches the end of its operational life, pylons, cables and stations may remain in the landscape for decades, shifting from functional infrastructure to abandoned structures and potential environmental liabilities. Designing a new system therefore also means taking responsibility for what is already there: removing elements that are no longer usable, limiting additional land take and restoring continuity and environmental quality to the site.

This issue is now central to the future of the Aosta Valley’s mountain landscape. Since 2025, the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta has launched a survey of disused cable transport infrastructure, supported by funding for the design of dismantling and landscape restoration works. This approach recognises that the transition of Alpine infrastructure cannot be limited to technological innovation, but must also address the physical traces left behind in the landscape.

In the “Cervino The One” project, this environmental responsibility is combined with research into the architectural quality of the new stations: their integration into the Alpine setting, the light and liveability of the interior spaces, the choice of materials and the overall visitor experience.

Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Breuil-Cervinia–Plan Maison cable car therefore means revisiting a history that has profoundly transformed access to and development within the mountain environment. It also means considering how that history can continue through infrastructure capable of meeting contemporary needs while caring for a fragile Alpine landscape.
