‘La Culla di Bologna’ opens a new chapter for Irccs Policlinico Sant’Orsola

On 19 December 2024, the new Sant’Orsola Polyclinic Maternity Hospital, known as ‘La Culla di Bologna (The Cradle of Bologna)’, was inaugurated in Bologna. A public project of excellence, made possible thanks to funding from the Emilia-Romagna Region amounting to over 45 million euros. The facility covers almost 9,000 square metres dedicated to caring for women and children, with state-of-the-art spaces including delivery rooms, operating theatres, laboratories, and an obstetric-gynaecological emergency room. The opening of this facility represents a significant milestone for the city and the entire regional health system, ensuring access to high-level care through the national health service.Policreo has been part of this transformation process thanks to drafting a specific Feasibility Study dedicated to the functional and architectural reconfiguration of the Paediatric-Neonatology Area of the Maternal and Infantile Pole. This intervention is, however, part of the Master Plan, also developed by Policreo for the Irccs Policlinico Sant’Orsola, to outline the design strategies for the planning of works to improve and innovate the entire settlement, functional, health and care configuration of the Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria di Bologna.

‘The Cradle of Bologna’ results from an extraordinary collaboration between institutions, companies and workers, who have worked intensively to meet the planned deadlines. This achievement demonstrates how cooperation and collective commitment can create spaces that combine functionality, hospitality and sustainability. The new facility has been designed to ensure maximum comfort and welcome, with innovative solutions such as water birthing tubs, bright spaces and decorations intended to instil serenity, all with the integration of advanced technologies and a focus on energy efficiency (nZEB classification).

At the inauguration, leading institutional figures participated, including the President of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Michele de Pascale, the Councillor for Health Policies, Massimo Fabi, the Mayor of Bologna Matteo Lepore,  the Archbishop of Bologna Cardinal, Matteo Maria Zuppi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bologna, Simona Tondelli, the Director General of the Sant’Orsola Polyclinic, Chiara Gibertoni and  the U. O. of Obstetrics and Prenatal Age Medicine Gianluigi Pilu.

We are happy to have contributed to this extraordinary project, which represents a model of excellence in hospital design and a symbol of the value of the public health service, which guarantees access to high-quality care for all.
