Piazza pia opens for the beginning of the Jubilee

A project that enhances history and creates new urban connections

The Piazza Pia redevelopment project, realised for Roma Capitale in the framework of the Jubilee, represents a strategic intervention to return a unique portion of the city to pedestrian enjoyment and improve the urban quality of one of the most iconic places in the historic centre. The functional design for the implementation of the intervention was supervised by Policreo Srl and Proger SpA, with the aim of harmonising functionality and respect for the historical heritage.

A new public space without barriers

The project involves the extension of the subway Lungotevere in Sassia, allowing the undergrounding of vehicular traffic for 132 metres in addition to a connecting ramp of 58 metres. This solution eliminates the barriers that currently separate pedestrian flows between Castel Sant’Angelo and St. Peter’s, guaranteeing continuity to the historical axis connecting Hadrian’s Mausoleum and St. Peter’s Basilica. The new configuration completely pedestrianises Piazza Pia, eliminating the traffic light intersection and enhancing the connections between the square, the Lungotevere and the gardens of the Bastions of Castel Sant’Angelo.

An intervention oriented towards sustainability

The redevelopment integrates sustainability and accessibility criteria, improving the relationship between the pedestrian area and the Lungotevere thanks to the replacement of the retaining wall with a green landscaped cordon. This element not only guarantees accessibility, but also contributes to climate and acoustic mitigation, improving the liveability of the area.

Main objectives

  • Pedestrianisation of the entire Piazza Pia area, including the current traffic light intersection.
  • Redevelopment of the Vatican Promenade, up to the church of Santa Maria Annunziata in Borgo.
  • Enhanced connections between the square and the gardens of the Bastions of Castel Sant’Angelo.
  • Elimination of visual and physical barriers to favour the inclusiveness and usability of the new public space.

A shared commitment for the future of Rome

The project was promoted by Roma Capitale and realised under the supervision of ANAS SpA and the group of designers Proger SpA and Policreo Srl. The construction was entrusted to Salcef SpA, with the technical support of Safe certified structure Ingegneria Srl. This project is a virtuous example of how collaboration between different realities can give rise to innovative urban solutions, capable of combining respect for history and vision for the future.
